![]() What an amazing Lord we have! He cares so much for us that He is grieved by our lack of faith. Let us take some time with the Lord Jesus Christ today and ask that He would strengthen our faith so that we will be ready to face whatever challenges come our way. The answer is always the same, is it not? Nothing. So, no matter how hard we try, we will find our faith ebb and flow. ![]() We are creatures of this earth, continually led away from Christ by the things of this world. Or, maybe the better question would be, how consistent is our faith? How strong is our faith? Do we grieve the Lord Jesus Christ because of our lack of faith. Whether I am right or not, we still are left with the same question. However, something really stood out of me about this verse. In the context of this verse, Jesus was in the city of Bethany where Mary & Martha were weeping over the death of their brother, Lazarus. Jesus continued to use the natural events in the lives of His friends to show forth the glory of God, and to show them that He was the Son of God. Though their lack of faith grieved them, He continued to strengthen them for the time when He would no longer be there. Of course, many of you know the shortest verse is John 11:35 saying, Jesus wept. But for all its grammatical simplicity, it’s packed with unfathomable complexity. When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. The shortest verse in the Bible is John 11:35: Jesus wept. Jesus did not weep over the death itself since He knew Lazarus would soon be raised and ultimately spend eternity with Him in heaven. Jesus wept ( John 11:35) when He gathered with the sisters and others mourning Lazarus’s death. Remember, what Jesus said in John 11:4 when he first heard that Lazarus was sick. John 11:145 concerns the death and resurrection of Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha and a friend of our Lord. I think Jesus wept because He was grieved by the unbelief of the people, especially Mary and Martha. in an ancient Syriac version and in the Gospel of Thomas (80:1112) his given name. ![]() 37 But some of them said, Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man. m 36 So the Jews said, See how he loved him. He understood the thoughts of the people, such as those expressed in verse 37.Īnd some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? 21 Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had. ![]() Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. But for all its grammatical simplicity, it’s packed with unfathomable complexity. 1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha. The shortest verse in the Bible is John 11:35: Jesus wept. That two-word verse from the book of John tells us of Jesus’s reaction when He got to the tomb of Lazarus, who had died four days before (John 11:39). The clue, to me, is in John 11, verse 40. John 11:35 is the shortest verse in the English translations of the Bible. While that may very well be the answer, somehow I think there was another reason. 43For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, 44And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. Why did Jesus weep? I have heard a lot of varying explanations for this, most agreeing that he was overcome with grief over the death of Lazarus. 41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, 42Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. 40And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. Because Jesus is God the Son, He is one with God, and even participated in the Creation of the world with the Father and the Spirit. Its deeper implications touch on the complicated nature of Jesus Christ. 39And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. What Does it Mean that 'Jesus Wept' The direct meaning of this verse is simple, when He went to the tomb of Lazarus, He shed tears. 38Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
