So I’ve just finished me bacon and egg and here we are. Good evening! It seems so early, really, to do a concert, you know? ‘Cause we only got out of bed about 2:30. (At the 45:30 mark, after the last notes of “No Quarter” die away, Robert Plant says: “Thank you. When they killed the house lights, you could see it was daylight out in the parking lot.” “When the concert started it was still bright daylight outside. “The interesting thing about the concert was it was on a Sunday and it was started at 6 o’clock in the evening,” Eberlein said. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones had released five albums by the time they hit Mobile and were, many fans would say, at the height of their powers. I was able to work with all the tunes on Led Zeppelin I when I was in the eighth and ninth grade.” And there was actually an incredible book of sheet music for the album. “And when Led Zeppelin I came out, a friend of my parents gave me the album. “I’ve always been a guitar player from the time I was 6 years old,” he said. ![]() By the time that show came around, he was well on his way to a career as a guitarist on the Mobile scene. When Eberlein says “any music before or since,” he’s talking about a lot.

However, some literature as well as reports from some surgical mask manufacturers have shown that blue surgical masks might include traces of formaldehyde and bronopol. It is not common practice for surgical masks to be manufactured using formaldehyde. Blue surgical masks can also be made of polystyrene, polycarbonate, polyethylene, or polyester- all of which are types of fabrics derived from thermoplastic polymers. The material most commonly used to make these masks is polypropylene-a type of fabric made from a “thermoplastic” polymer (meaning that it’s easy to work with and shape at high temperatures). Blue surgical face masks are made with non-woven fabric, which has been shown to have better bacteria filtration and airflow than woven cloth.

(The bio-passport has two modules: steroid and hematological, or blood, and checks levels of various substances in both, called markers, against both human norms and the athlete's own historical figures to look for changes that might suggest manipulation by doping.)įinally, the most sophisticated GC-MS testing also looks for metabolites of AAS: those such as testosterone, which can have natural or synthetic sources, and purely synthetic stuff like Stanozolol or Trenbolone. There are several types of GC-MS testing, including that used for bio-passsport data, which examines samples for levels of certain AAS that are naturally produced by the body. Samples are also screened via a method called gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). An out-of-range result triggers more analysis. So is engine misfiring, like backfires or frequent stuttering. Depending on the exact nature of the issue, this can be as mild as a sudden drop in gas mileage, or as serious as your call stalling on the road, or failing to start at all.Ībrupt or unnecessary shifting is another sign that your PCM is starting to fail. You may have problems with your Transmission Control Module (TCM), which is the part of the PCM that controls – surprise! – your transmission. If this happens, there’s either something causing your sensors to fail, you’re your PCM is faulty. For example, you may keep getting O 2 sensor errors, replacing your O 2 sensors, and getting the same errors again days later. In addition to these codes, you may be getting other check engine codes that return after repairs. If your state requires vehicle inspections, these may come up during that time. How do you know if a circuit board is acting up? We’ve explored common PCM failures before, but let’s do a quick recap.įirst off, there are error codes that indicate a faulty PCM. You can see if they’re broken, and easily observe when they’re malfunctioning. Brake calipers and tie rods are physical parts. Many people find electric vehicle parts confusing. How to Know if You Need a PCM Replacement Beyond that, if you want to change your vehicle’s gear shift ratio, you’ll need to buy a new PCM. Auto manufacturers don’t want people changing their PCM settings, because badly-done tweaks could cause crashes and leave them liable for damages.įactory PCMs can indeed be flashed, but only to restore them to factory settings in the event that they’ve become corrected. If someone tries to sell you this service, they’re lying. Some people claim to be able to reprogram your PCM for the track, at a fraction of the cost of buying a replacement. One thing to be aware of is your everyday shady mechanic. If you know what you’re doing and you want to change your automatic transmission’s gear shift pattern, there are plenty of PCMs out there that will get you more acceleration on the racetrack. The exception to this rule is the hardcore auto enthusiast who wants to tweak their car for improved performance. For the average person, using the OEM standard replacement is recommended, since it’s guaranteed to work properly with your vehicle and won’t void your warranty. If you’re not sure, you can find your PCM’s OEM replacement part number on the PCM itself, or in your manufacturer’s catalog. Even different versions of the same model can have different transmission ratios, meaning that it’s extremely important to make sure your PCM replacement is right for your vehicle. ![]() What to Look For in a PCM ReplacementĮvery model of vehicle has different needs. Here’s our complete guide to diagnosing a broken PCM, choosing a replacement, and getting one installed. Unless you’re driving a classic car, your car has a PCM under the hood. PCMs were far more efficient than older, mechanical, flywheel-based automatic transmissions, and took over the entire market by the mid-1980s. They did this by monitoring signals from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), throttle position sensor (TPS) and wheel speed sensor (WSS).īy using this data, they could shift intelligently, taking into account not only the engine’s RPMs, but also speed, torque, and whether or not the wheels are spinning (if the WSS data is faster than the VSS) or locking up (if the WSS is reporting speeds slower than the VSS). They were originally designed only to manage the powertrain and gear shifting. PCMs were first used in the late 1970s in performance cars. It monitors more than 100 functions on your car, from your automatic transmission to your O 2 sensors to your engine pressure. ![]() If you’ve ever gotten a low oil warning, or your check engine light or traction control light have come on, your PCM is behind that warning. The power control module, or PCM, is the brain of your car. Bob and Larry tell a story about when they were younger and worked taking people on luxury boat tours. Which brings me to the second story of the episode. Sometimes, you really are better off not forgiving them, and erecting some barriers instead. A mistake an adult makes a second time is more likely to be a mistake they make a third time, a third mistake more likely to be repeated a fourth one, and so on. Adults, have more self-control in the short term, but are less malleable in the long run. ![]() However, the lesson of giving second chances, once learned, sometimes does have to be unlearned. They will make mistakes and need to be forgiven again and again and again. In the short term, they have very little self-control, but they are also in the middle of forming their personalities, their identities and their whole style of interacting with people. In little kids, this tendency is a wee bit exaggerated. The fact is that humans, despite the best of intentions, often screw up a few more times before they actually change for the better. That said, I do actually think it is important for kids to learn to forgive repeatedly. The trouble with sticking around people after they’ve hurt you again and again is that often you end up getting hurt really badly. they are not actually good people to be around. they don’t have any actual intention to improve their behavior, but are merely apologizing as a learned behavior to avoid consequences and therefore B. The trouble with repeatedly forgiving somebody is that sometimes the fact that they keep having to apologize means that, A. This is one of those places where Christian teachings did not set me up well for the future. isn’t a fan of this, but all it takes to get him to accept the apology for a second time is the reminder that Jesus once told his disciples that they should forgive people “not seven times, but seventy times seven times.” (Matthew 18:22) This was apparently a complex metaphor for “you never stop forgiving.” ![]() Might I refresh your memory as to how well that worked last time? Jr’s Dad comes out and reminds them of that whole “don’t be assholes” thing, and they apologize again, and then Jr. The grapes keep their promise for all of five seconds. They apologize, with a promise to not do it again, and Jr. This is apparently a novel concept to them. He then puts on his best patient grown-up lecture voice, and explains to them that the thing about being mean is that being mean is mean and you should probably not do it. until he starts crying and Jr’s Dad comes out to see what’s going on. It opens with a family of grapes driving around, being petty and mean for no reason, until they encounter Jr. It was only the second episode, and I think they were still finding their voice. This one is actually a bit bland and preachy, as Veggie Tales goes. “Once upon a time, there were some very cranky grapes.” ![]() Larry leads us straight into the first story The Grapes of Wrath. It opens with a letter from a kid who is frustrated by this whole, “God says forgive everyone, seriously, you do not have a choice in this,” issue. The second Veggie Tales episode is one of the many Christian stories that helped form my understanding of forgiveness, prior to atheism. ![]() Now that I’m an atheist, forgiving still feels like a generally good thing to do, but why? What am I really doing when I forgive? Now that I don’t believe in a God demanding that I forgive everyone, is it ever acceptable to choose to not forgive? Is that ever a good decision? Sins were stains on our soul, but forgiveness washed them away, and just as God washed our sins away, we are required to follow his example and forgive others. I was raised to think of forgiveness in a very Christian context. People who apologize to me still get to hear a some variation on “I accept your apology.” My crisis is more metaphysical. I don’t mean that I’ve suddenly taken to holding permanent grudges. I’ll admit, I’m having a little bit of trouble figuring out what to do with forgiveness, now that I’m an atheist. Otherwise, I stand by pretty much everything here) ( note: I’m now a vaguely spiritual neopagan witchy-type. ![]() And how much more reticent to get together to discuss harms their tools can be seen causing right now. (And data exploitation as a tool to concentrate market power is nothing new.)Ĭertainly it speaks volumes about existing AI power structures that tech execs at AI giants including OpenAI, DeepMind, Stability AI and Anthropic are so happy to band and chatter together when it comes to publicly amplifying talk of existential AI risk. So of course there are clear commercial motivations for AI giants to want to route regulatory attention into the far-flung theoretical future, with talk of an AI-driven doomsday - as a tactic to draw lawmakers’ minds away from more fundamental competition and antitrust considerations in the here and now. Talk of existential AI risk also distracts attention from problems related to market structure and dominance, as Jenna Burrell, director of research at Data & Society, pointed out in this recent Columbia Journalism Review article reviewing media coverage of ChatGPT - where she argued we need to move away from focusing on red herrings like AI’s potential “sentience” to covering how AI is further concentrating wealth and power. It’s certainly notable that after a meeting last week between the UK prime minister and a number of major AI execs, including Altman and Hassabis, the government appears to be shifting tack on AI regulation - with a sudden keen interest in existential risk, per the Guardian’s reporting. ![]() Not to mention AI-driven spam! And the environmental toll of the energy expended to train these AI monsters. Or, indeed, baked in flaws like disinformation (“hallucination”) and risks like bias (automated discrimination). Such as the tools’ free use of copyrighted data to train AI systems without permission or consent (or payment) or the systematic scraping of online personal data in violation of people’s privacy or the lack of transparency from AI giants vis-a-vis the data used to train these tools. This drumbeat of hysterical headlines has arguably distracted attention from deeper scrutiny of existing harms. So, in recent months, there has actually been a barrage of heavily publicized warnings over AI risks that don’t exist yet. There was also the open letter signed by Elon Musk (and scores of others) back in March which called for a six-month pause on development of AI models more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4 to allow time for shared safety protocols to be devised and applied to advanced AI - warning over risks posed by “ever more powerful digital minds that no one - not even their creators - can understand, predict, or reliably control”. ![]() Per a short explainer on CAIS’ website the statement has been kept “succinct” because those behind it are concerned to avoid their message about “some of advanced AI’s most severe risks” being drowned out by discussion of other “important and urgent risks from AI” which they nonetheless imply are getting in the way of discussion about extinction-level AI risk. Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war. ![]() Here’s their (intentionally brief) statement in full: The statement, which is being hosted on the website of a San Francisco-based, privately-funded not-for-profit called the Center for AI Safety (CAIS), seeks to equate AI risk with the existential harms posed by nuclear apocalypse and calls for policymakers to focus their attention on mitigating what they claim is ‘doomsday’ extinction-level AI risk. Make way for yet another headline-grabbing AI policy intervention: Hundreds of AI scientists, academics, tech CEOs and public figures - from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis to veteran AI computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton, MIT’s Max Tegmark and Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn to Grimes the musician and populist podcaster Sam Harris, to name a few - have added their names to a statement urging global attention on existential AI risk. |
